یک مطالعه پدیدارشناسی: توسعه تفکر رهبری در سیستم های معماری باز در وزارت نیروی دریایی
Abstract: The United States Navy needs innovative leaders to provide solutions to meet the warfighters’ needs. A Navy organization, located in the continental United States, needs thought leaders who can innovate and bring people together to direct the current warfare environment. Thought leaders are known for pioneering ideas and demonstrating the self-assurance to share those ideas. The purpose of the qualitative, phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of thought leaders in open architecture systems (OAS) to gain insight and understand the essence of what it means to be such a leader. Fifteen study participants, with at least 5 years’ experience in OAS, answered open-ended questions to provide insight into the central research question and four subresearch questions. The central research question was: how do study participants perceive and describe their personal development as thought leaders? The four research sub-questions explored the role education, experience, the military’s culture of risk aversion, and perceived gaps played in their development as thought leaders. Four themes emerged from the analysis of interviews: (a) all study participants (100%) considered mentoring as important to their development as a thought leader, (b) a large number of participants (93%) felt education was valuable to thought leadership development, (c) some of the participants (67%) viewed critical thinking skills as vital to thought leadership, and (d) many of the study participants (60%) believed work experience in higher-level organizations is helpful in developing thought leaders. Future studies should use larger organizations, in other military services. Findings may provide the basis for creating a more formalized program to develop and mentor current and future thought leaders.
